Social protection for children in Argentina: advances and future challenges

Oscar Cetrángolo, Javier Curcio and Roxana Maurizio

This article describes the current pillars of social protection for children in Argentina and deals with their challenges in terms of coverage, conditionalities, impacts and institutional design. It concludes that despite the progress achieved in providing cash transfers to households with children, Argentina’s current situation requires to consolidate a comprehensive social protection system grounded in universal rights. One of the most important challenges is to achieve universal coverage. Also, greater efforts must be made to remove structural barriers that create social exclusion. The realisation of full social inclusion of vulnerable groups requires reducing segmentation and disparities in the quality and supply of basic services for targeted and non-targeted populations. Issues such as childcare, gender inequality and child labour should also be considered a priority.
